about the
Internationale Braille Seminar
- from 20th to 23rd February 1997
- at the Course and Holiday Centre Hotel
"Solsana" of the Swiss Federation of the Blind and Partially-Sighted, CH-3792 Saanen bei Gstaad
- organised by the Swiss Braille
Watchers
- in the German, English,
French und Esperanto languages
People with an interest in braille from 13 countries met to share their knowledge and experience of developments in various braille systems. Most of the participants were well-informed and experienced users of braille but there were also representatives of the Swiss Library for the Blind and Partially-Sighted as well as teachers competent in braille present.
Their main concerns were:
- to increase awareness of the divergence of the basic braille systems of various
languages which is detrimental to the exchange of information
- to insist on a sustained quality of professionally produced braille print
- to make clear that braille has not been made redundant through the use of recordings
and similar means.
- to attack the indifferent use of computer braille systems where traditional braille
systems are more suitable
- to increase public sensibility for a far-sighted and coordinated development of
computer braille systems
